How to Bet On College Hoops

College Basketball Betting 101:

Ask any professional sports gambler, and they’ll tell you the same thing: If you know what you’re doing, college basketball is the easiest sport to be successful betting. If you know what you’re doing…

And with the season just kicking off, here are some helpful pointers to make you a success, and enlarge your bank account.

Like Any Other Sport, Experience Matters:

There’s a reason we bet on experienced quarterbacks, pitchers and goaltenders, they’ve seen it all and been through every situation. College basketball is no different, experience matters and especially at the point guard position.

Just look at the last six National Champions in the sport, and you’ll notice a trend. UConn in 2004, North Carolina in 2005, Florida in 2006 and 2007, Kansas in 2008 and North Carolina again in 2009 all have one thing in common: In every year but one, they started either a junior or senior at point guard.

It’s the position where experience and poise matter, and if my money is on the line, it’s where I want a guy with more of it than anywhere else.

Every Point Counts:

And because of it, make sure whoever you’re backing can make foul shots.

This isn’t football, where teams score in three and six point increments, lots of money is lost and made with every free thrown.

And this is true more so in college basketball than the pros, where each game means more and teams are usually more likely to foul and stop the clock.

In college basketball, teams make other teams “earn,” wins, as opposed to give them away. Make sure they don’t make you earn your win as well.

Certain Teams Just Handle Themselves Better:

It’s stupid but it’s true, there are certain teams that just “know” how to be better favorites than other teams.

Teams like Duke, North Carolina and Tennessee usually blow out inferior teams early in the season, because, well that’s what they’re supposed to do. Now look at a team like UConn. I love the Huskies, but they’re notorious for years for playing up and down to their competition.

Again, certain teams just know how to handle themselves better.

Finally, Trust Your Gut:

It’s true in every sport, and no different in this one. Go with what you know, and trust yourself.

There’s a reason you’ve stayed up all these hours, watched all these games (San Diego vs. UC-Irvine the other night, what were you thinking?), and most times your right.

And most importantly, the next time your brother’s college roommate tries to talk you into Colorado State -22.5, you’ll know better. After all, you saw them barely cover against Eastern Illinois a few weeks ago with your own two eyes.
